ABOUT SALT and The Team

Save A Life Today (SALT) is a local Kern County nonprofit that exists to raise funds for suicide prevention and to assist those bereaved by suicide.

Ellen Eggert

SALT Founder
I am a 3 time survivor of suicide loss, an attempt survivor and work in the mental health world. Preventing suicide and working with those who have lost a loved one to suicide has become my life's long work and I believe one is too many.

I got involved with S.A.L.T because of my 41 year old son who lives with a mental illness and because of that illness, he has felt suicidal many times. I have lost dear friends to suicide due to those thought disorders caused  their mental illness. Depression, bipolar and other mental disorders are associated with and contribute to suicidal ideation.

I am a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and have served on their board for  over 10 years. Currently, for NAMI, I serve as a Family Support Group facilitator and Family to Family Education teacher to support, educate and provide awareness to family members and friends with loved ones with a unwanted, no fault mental disorder. The more educated one is, the better equipped one is to help, support and prevent much pain associated with the illness.

I am honored to serve on S.A.L.T  because this is a very important, worthwhile organization and because of the work they accomplish in many areas. I serve to help family members understand a very complicated illness and for suicide prevention, as well.

It will be 4 yrs this April 2017 that my husband of 29 1/2 yrs ended his life.  I can't even believe that I have survived without my husband for 1 day let alone 4 yrs.  If it wasn't for the "Survivor Support Group"  that our group leader Ellen Eggert started yrs ago I really don't know what would of happened to me and many others that attend our meetings.

It is a place of love, comfort and most of all support where we can say how we feel...... because we all understand the pain and heartache that you are feeling after a love one ends their life.  Like Ellen always say's, "We get it"  we absolutely understand your pain.  We are there to listen and cry with you.  I will continue to come to the meetings because I can't live or survive without this group.
